» Study: PowerPoint animations are comprehension killers - Ars Technica
This is interesting - did not know that animations have an effect besides ‘WOWing’ the audience. :) Did not also consider those who will be printing the slides for future use.
Pedagogy researchers have found that people stop paying attention after about 20 minutes. That’s as long as a lecture should be at a university. After 20 minutes, the students can break up into small groups to solve problems, with the teacher wandering around the room assisting groups as necessary. Even the Federal Aviation Administration has figured this out. They discourage flight instructors from lecturing without interruption. The instructors knows what she said, but she doesn’t know what the students heard unless she stops and asks the students to answer a question or solve a problem.
Of what use is the ability to sit passively in a lecture? How many jobs are there in the U.S. that pay someone to do something like sit passively in a lecture? What if the teacher needs to communicate something to all of the students in the class? That’s why God invented email and the Web. If a professor needs to summarize the best points made in a lab discussion, that can be done via a broadcast email. If all of the students seem confused about a point that isn’t covered well in their textbook, the professor can prepare a Web page on the subject and email it to the students.

Teachers in UP Diliman should learn this - that we only need to lecture for 20 minutes tops! :)
